My current primary tools are a Canon R7 camera with a very basic minimal set of lenses in my kit and an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Often, the best shots come from the most accessible devices. Whether it’s a high-end mirrorless camera or the smartphone in your pocket, every device has unique strengths that can capture stunning images. The key is to work with what you have and to have a good understanding of the features and tools available in your equipment and how to best apply those features in each situation.

Learning Through Experimentation

My journey into photography has been largely self-directed, fueled by an endless stream of digital resources. The internet is a treasure trove of tutorials, forums, and inspirational galleries. Yet, the real growth has happened in the field—through pressing the shutter, assessing the outcomes, and learning from every misstep. Each photo, perfect or flawed, has taught me something new, pushing me to refine my technique and enhance my creative expression. There have been days where I go out there and think I have taken amazing shots based on what I saw on camera only to find that I have a collection of blurry or underexposed photos. This is all part of the learning process. While it can be frustrating at times I encourage you to learn from and work through these challenges. It is a very rewarding experience once you are able the go back and overcome those difficulties and get your shot!

One of the greatest revelations in my photography adventure has been the realization that you don’t need to venture far to capture the magic. The landscapes and daily life of Central Florida provide a rich tapestry of scenes waiting to be captured. By exploring my immediate surroundings, I’ve not only saved on travel expenses but also grown a deeper appreciation for my local environment. This practice has unveiled the often-missed splendors found not far from our own backyards.

Editing is an integral component of photography, and Adobe Lightroom is my go-to tool. Its powerful capabilities allow me to bring out the best in my photos, ensuring that the final product matches my initial vision. Lightroom’s intuitive interface is suitable for both novices and experienced photographers, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to streamline their editing process. I mostly now use lightroom for iPad on the iPad pro which I feel has come a long way, offers a huge variety of tools that only used to be available on the desktop version. I find that I can perform most if not all of my workload on the iPad. There are a few features that still require the desktop version. We can address those details in our tutorials.
